"If you’re like us, the Camo Monk songs on any Westside Gunn, Conway, Benny, Tha God Fahim, or Mach-Hommy release are your favorites without fail. Monk not only samples obscure jazz records, the way he flips and loops those samples is kind of a jazz all its own.

Well, remember the date folks, because November 16th is when we managed to persuade Monk to premiere his highly anticipated LP, MADGURU, for ya’ll.

Originally titled, Larry Gagosian, for the famed art dealer, as the album came together it morphed into something else; sounding like a cross between Madlib and Young Guru, he settled on a portmanteau of their names as the new title.

Out of the 18 tracks on here, 13 are instrumentals that may have been too good for rap bars.

“Welcome to Buffalo” will make the hardest thug shed a tear, while “Discipline 99 Pt. 1” invokes those classic DJ Premier instrumental interludes, ones practically begging to be spat upon.

As for the songs with verses, the guests clearly knew that they had to go in — this is Camo’s solo, after all.

Other than Mach, there are cameos by Hus Kingpin, Al Divino, and Westside Gunn, who basically does spoken word. Wha? Yup! Get ready to take a trip when you push play."
